Nevertheless, it’s notoriously hard to shed unwanted pounds, and even harder to keep it off.
These simple tips might keep you on track to get the body you’ve always wanted.
1. Give Some of Your Calories to “Junk”
This one might seem counterintuitive, but studies have shown over and over again that if you never indulge, you end up feeling deprived and depressed and are more likely to fall off the diet wagon.
Most experts, including guru Jillian Michaels, recommend giving anywhere from 10 to 20% of your calories to your indulgence foods.
This can be seen as a sort of motivator to keep you going when on a strict diet. There’s still a need for strong discipline, as it can be very tempting to keep eating treats once you start. Don’t spoil the hard work you’re putting into sticking to a diet by opening another bag of chips once you remember how great they taste!
For example, if you were on a 1,500 calories a day diet, 150 to 225 of those calories could be spent on “fun” food – things you’d enjoy more than that bland salad.
That’s roughly the amount you’d get from a single serving of chips, a cookie or a plain chocolate bar. Spend your allowance carefully, as the amount of calories varies between treats.
Once you’ve had that amount though, put the less nutritious and more tempting items out of sight or in hard-to-reach places, so you won’t be able to go back for seconds as easily.
Think about whether you’d find sweet or savory treats more satisfying. If you suffer from a daily sugar craving, a piece of sweet fruit or a can of diet soda may be a better solution than spending your extra calorie allowance.
